Light Emitting Diodes

Light Emiting Diodes - or LEDs - are a great new energy conservation technique that has potential to make a significant impact on CO2 levels. Eight times more powerful than incandescent bulbs, LEDs emit a much higher percentage of light while generating very little unwanted heat. Their initial cost is slightly higher than the alternatives, but they more than make up for it in their energy savings and lowered environmental impact.

Compact Fluorescents

Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs) are a quick way to lower your energy costs. They provide high-quality light without the heat of incandescent bulbs, and last much longer. However, they do contain trace amounts of mercury - which can cause significant environmental impact if they are left in landfills. If you use CFLs, you might want to look into recycling programs, such as the one offered by Home Depot.

Dimmers

Dimmers are a great way to use less energy and prolong the life of your light bulbs. For example, a 1500 hour incandescent bulb will last 10 years when dimmed 33% and used 3 hours a day. When choosing a dimmer, it is important to know what kind of fixture you'll be using, and whether or not you'll use more than one light switch with your fixture.
