QUESTION

I am so overwhelmed with selecting new lighting for my home. Do you have any suggestions that will make the process easier?

ANSWER

Updating fixtures or selecting lighting for a new home can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be. We put together some guidelines that will hopefully steer you in the right direction.

Budget: Before you get started, decide how much you’d like to spend. Carrington’s selection includes a variety of price points.

Amount of Lighting: Depending on the room you’re lighting, there are a variety of things to consider – including how much light you’ll need. A basic formula to find out involves multiplying the length and the width of the room (in feet) and then multiplying that number by 1.5. The result indicates how much wattage the room requires. However, some areas – like kitchen islands or bathrooms – may require stronger light. Multiply their square footage by 2.5.

Room Size: If you are lighting a large room, lighting up a few area with pools of light can make it feel cozier. A small room can be made spacious by washing its walls with even lighting.

Room Height: In areas with foot traffic, fixtures should be at least 7 feet from the floor.

Style: Start by looking through magazines to get an idea of your taste. When you come to the Carrington showroom, bring these pictures – and any colour swatches from your home – with you. When you find a fixture you like, browse the rest of the collection for matching pieces.

With two sizes (10″ and 14″ diameter), you can place these little gems anywhere. A couple of smaller pendants look stunning over a kitchen island, or a single large pendant over a small eating area.

Spring is in the air! As everyone begins to venture into the outdoors, it’s time to freshen things up. First up? New outdoor lighting. (Definitely on my list of things to do.)

Hinkley Lighting has some most excellent lighting tips in their Lighting Made Simple guide. Among these tips, is “How to Size an Outdoor Lantern”. They suggest the height of your outdoor lantern should be based on the height of the door they will be dressing. For example:

1 Lantern: Only have space for one outdoor lantern? Size it about one-third the height of the door.

2 Lanterns: Room for two? Size them smaller – about one-fourth the height of the door.

Guidelines

1.) As a general rule, your lanterns should appear about half the size of your door from 50′ away.

2.) Pay attention to the bulk and design of your fixture. If it has an extra scroll or a longer tail, it will appear larger and you may have to select the smaller version.

3.) The center of the light bulb should rest 66″ above the door threshold.

4.) When in doubt, go larger.
